SELF REFLECTION - MODEL MAKING

  • limited resources made it extremely hard to make models
  • only materials I had suitable for model making were left-over boxboard from a different subject, printer paper, sketch paper and trace paper
  • none of these materials had structural integrity other than the boxboard which is part of the reason why most of my models have curved structures rather than geometrical with corners
positive points
  • low structural integrity made it easier to create abstract shapes
  • shape and form of my models turned out really nice in my opinion
  • transparency of trace paper is a lot more interesting to look at compared to completely transparent materials such as vinyl
negative points
  • models started to seem a little repetitive
  • didn't have the resources to add colour to my models which make them a little less interesting to look at when compared to colourful models

PHOTO LIGHTING

BEFORE LIGHTING ADJUSTMENT
  • very dull
  • no exposure
  • not interesting to look at
  • shadows are too strong

AFTER LIGHTING ADJUSTMENT
  • very bright and clean
  • higher exposure
  • less shadows
  • a lot nicer to look at visually
  • fits my personal aesthetic more

LASER CUT FILE PROBLEM

For my laser cut file, I had to separate my pieces into two pages because they did not all fit into the dimensions given for one page.
At first, I just changed the scale of the pieces in order to make them fit, but after asking my tutor whether I was allowed to separate the pieces like I did in the image, I decided to do that and keep the scale to 1:1.

MODEL MATERIALS

experimentation with adding materials to images of models

materials used:

  • walls: timber
  • floors: grey carpet
reason:
  • models are supposed to represent a youthful and playful nature so bright colours were used
  • more comfortable and feel more "home-like" than cold timber or tiled floors
  • warmth
method:
  • obtained an image of timber
  • cropped the images to fit each "wall" (ie. where the wall bent)
  • used the "perspective warp" tool to create angles in the wall
